Hey guys,

I had the epiphany the other night that I might be able to put my DIYMA 12 in a custom enclosure between the front seats in my Ridgeline. After ripping out the factory console yesterday and taking some measurements, I am certain that I can fabricate the correct sized enclosure and still be able to retain some of the factory parts of the console for a pretty stealthy look.

This would also free up the space in the back of the cab that would have contained the 12 and allow me to still put my road bike in the back with ease.

while I had the console out, I placed my current enclosure between the seats and played some tracks. Obviously, the "seat of the pants' effect with the 12 firing right at my rear end is pretty intense. The other thing that I noticed was what happened to some vocals. I was listening to a Christine Augilera song on a recent Herbie Hancock cd that I picked up. Having the sub right next to me added a fundamental to her voice that put her vocal presence that much more right in the middle of the car in front of me. It's like the power from her diaphragm is pressuring the air. Maybe that isn't a great description. It just simply adds presence and another octave to her range. I put a friend in the car tonight and he listened to that song and said he needed to hurry up and get home to see his wife. :)

I plan on competing for the first time with this install, hopefully this summer. I was just wondering if anyone has experience, negative or positive, with having the subwoofer up front? Any past SQ champions done it that way (I've seen a couple of trucks with floors cut out for subs on this thread that have done well)? Just wanting to know if anyone else has tried and either failed or had success, plus anything I could listen for in listening tests prior to getting started in fabrication?

FYI - I will be running 2 x zapco DC 1000.4's (on the way) into Dynaudio system 340 and DIYMA sub (in the car). Current head unit is a couple year old alpine with T/A and para EQ, but plans on going with something a little more natural sounding on the HU, with no processing since the amps will handle that internally.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or thoughts.

i plan on doing the same thing in my regular cab silverado

from what i have read, through searching, if you go sealed, downfiring is the way to go, make sure you have enough space between your sub and truck floor for the sub to unload properly

not sure about the space needed though

i'll be following this thread

cheers

There is not enough room between the seats to fire the subwoofer downward. It will have to fire to one side or the other.

Check out DIYMA member "Unpredictableacts" center consoles. There are quite a few members on here using his consoles in there truck. Hillbilly SQ and a few others (that names fail me right now:() Are using them with good results.

If you sidefire it I'd strongly recomend firing it away from you. This will cut down on localization. I downfire a 12" in my single cab sierra and doing so do so much for the staging I should kick myself for not doing it sooner. I've always downfired a 10" behind one of the seats until this. I'll be rocking the sub this way for as long as I have a vehicle that will allow it:)

Yeah... It Zounds vury nice... Tickles your asshairs too sometimes... A lot of people ask me, where's your sub?... Doesn't broadcast where it is so much... It kinda blends in even before you tune it do so...
I'd love to hear what a DIYMA sounds like in that type of settup...
I'm playin the Mag rt now... Like it!

How much space do you think you can get total? I would LOVE to see it port tuned in the low-mid 20's, allowing a lower crossover point and keeping the threshold of localization minimized.

Ohhhhh! This could be a perfect candidate for a passive radiator! C'mon, Tony, you sold me on some wild-assed ideas that worked (4x 8" midbass drivers in the rear deck of a T-Bird comes to mind). I think you can get a 12" PR with enough displacement either from CSS, or maybe Janowitz can build one.

Down firing 12 in center console for me (05 2500HD Crew Cab). Had the same type of setup in my 02 1500 Extra Cab. But, I built my own before I found DIYMA.:p

I wouldn't do firing to the side (either side). That is going to cause way to much localization of the subwoofer (you discovered that already). No way to fix that. If you are going to compete it will kill your imaging scores.

I used a 12" in my F150. I actually fired it to the rear in my center console. that is where it sounded the best in my truck to me. I had a friend do the same in a Dodge truck (he used a 15" ).

The biggest thing I found was the difference in time delay. For people with cars and SUVs to get the subbass up front they delay the entire front stage (because the subwoofer is the speaker with the greatest pathlengths from the listener). With the center console subwoofer, I found I had to delay the subwoofer to get it to work. I believe my time delay was in the 5.5 ms area or so. It was definitely over 5ms. Which is huge but hell it was right next to me. That was all done by ear though and measurements. Measurements might tell you something else.

One of the reasons why I bought the diyma sub is that it disappears so well. I didn't notice localization as much when listening last night as I noticed that everything seemed to come from up front, with more of a midbass presence up front.

Andy - your comments parallel what I was already thinking. I do have a question, though. How does firing out the rear of the enclosure differ from firing out the sides with regards to localization?

Regarding the size available - if I stick to an enclosure that mirrors the size of the factory console, I'll be at about 0.75-0.80 ft3 gross. I could extend to the dash and easily get up to 1 ct ft. Ultimately the console is going to have to have drink holders, and armrest, and a small amount of storage. The enclosure for the sub only needs to be about 13" tall, which comes just above the top edge of the seat cushion, giving me plenty of room to build the functionality on top.

I have a 1 cu ft box and have toyed with porting it to see what it sounds like. I am hesitant to do it because I have preferred sealed in the past. That is not to say that I am closed minded about it. I threw this out on the forum because I wanted to get some educated opinions on the approach. I am open to any suggestions, then it is a matter of trying it out for sound prior to getting into a serious build.
