Bought a used sub but when I move the cone gently by hand there is a scratching sound. The cone moves but slowly.

Assume it got a knock whilst being shipped.

How can I repair it? Or is it dead?

Cheers!

I have a sub that makes a scratchy sound when moving the cone by hand, but it's fine, just 17 years old and can't hold the voice coil in the center of the gap under uneven hand pressure. That being said, your problem is the voice coil rubbing something, if it were dropped you could have a magnet slug out of alignment or a bent basket, if it wasn't dropped then it's defective or fried.

It’s a Genesis Audiophile 12” (Peerless XLS 12 I believe).

Think it’s been dropped when shipped as the other one I got from the seller is fine.
