so I have an sa-15 running off an audioque 1200.1 at 2 ohms in a 3.7 cu.ft. 32hz enclosure I just built. this replaced 2 ma audio 12 sealed that I thought had really bad sound quality. So this setup sounds great on some songs and others it just sounds like noise. ive been listening to mostly rap since its been installed(2 days) is it in a subwoofers nature to sound kinda bad sometimes?

I honestly think your dealing with mastering issues. rap especially has really wide ranging levels of mastering skill. so you'll hear one song that hits nice and low, then another song that hits almost not at all but the mids sound like they are working hard..is this right? what your dealing with is marketing says the songs should sound good on tiny phones/Bluetooth jamboxes so people can annoy me while they walk down the street/wait for buses..and since car audio is such a small business these days compared to iTunes downloads, you end up with terrible sounding music coming out of the mainstream channels.

interesting. so you think that some songs are made/do well with subwoofers, while others are made without one in mind? ill have to put on some rock and see what that sounds like. I have a gain knob coming in the mail so I guess if it doesn't sound good I can turn the subs down without cycle the menue on my head unit

I'm gonna chime in because I had this issue in the past. It was the mp3 quality. My Laptop and TV Speakers certain songs would sound great. Got in the car and those certain songs sounded horrible. I realized than when downloading songs that my laptop or tv can't pick up certain frequencies that my car sound system could. I had to write down a list of bad songs while in my car and keep track of the high quality ones. I noticed bitrate was kinda low on some of the songs. The songs that were 3MB or less sometimes were the distorted ones. I try to look at the size of the file now and have a little bit better home audio and can weed out the bad songs. This was going back a few years and I think audio quality is a tad better. So like the above said look at your sources, rap has some amazing production these days but also some ghetto type low quality production too.

There are a bunch of potential problems. One, as mentioned could be the recording quality. You could also be pushing the woofer too hard. How certain are you of the tuning on the box? Have you modeled the response? Do you have a sub sonic filter? You could be getting mechanical noise below the tuning frequency, the box could not be ideal for that woofer. Many things could be going on here.

so I turned my subs around facing forward and made a wall out of blankets and foam mattress covers to form the wall that separates front and back waves. What I found is the the one album that just sounded like noise before, I can now hear the individual beats. they were pretty fast baselines that I couldn't distinguish when the subs were facing the rear. It is sooo much better but not perfect. I extensively researched and modeled my enclosure and I have the subsonic filter set around 30. I also upgraded my power and ground to 4 gauge from 6 gauge and noticed more volume, still have to do the big 3 and maybe make this forward facing sub setup more permanent. I have a 2003 base impala 3.4l
