I think this is the perfect example of the saying: "it's the thought that counts." Just thinking about fixing it, fixed it!

Just kidding. I would still pull it apart and see what you can find. Maybe re-run your grounds, if the problem doesn't come back then you're good. If it does, then you'll have to try again.

The whine is A/C from the alt leaking into the regulated D/C. Check the negative to block connection, and negative to chassis connection. May have an alt going bad; burnt diodes. A BandAid is to place a 50V, 1000uF cap across the powers and grounds. Fix the source problem.
