I know there are several types of relay and relay boxes out there. Some are super cheap and some uber expensive. What type of relays are people using to turn on amps/processors/accessories? Starting to lay out an amp rack for my son and will use some form of relay for the two amps and processor in his hatch.

Is something like a relay box from a company like Sparked Innovations complete overkill?

sure, it might be overkill, however i use the smaller relay box from Sparked Innovations and love it. more specifically, i have the RBX-LITE four-channel relay box. super quick/easy to install. now if i was only turning on a couple of amplifiers and no other accessory, i would probably have saved the coin and stuck with a traditional Bosch type relay. i also have a standard rocker switch on each of the 4 outputs to turn on/off any combination of my 4 amplifiers when i'm in the mood to tune and/or experiment. relay box or Bosch relay = same end result, just a matter of preference. that's my $0.02.

i am looking at relays that can be timed for on/off timing/sequencing so you can tune in on/off delay times if you need/like to. search "12V Timed Relay" on amazon, they are ~$2-$20 ea. i cannot recc a specific relay per se, but this is an example. seems like a cool added feature. you can add few seconds of delay up to hours.... depending on the relay.

for example, if you wanted to guarantee you turn on/off your processor before your amp or something like that.

If you buy a relay board like that, buy a real TE or Omron relay from digikey and swap it. The songle relays on most Chinese PCB are junk.

Too bad Phoenix Gold doesn't still make the Titanium DD10 distribution center...

I'm not sure what exactly you are trying to do with the relay(s)?

But if it is just to turn on multiple amps and/or your DSP in the system, refer to the YouTube video by Barevids that was posted above.

But if you do want to use standard relays for turn-on purposes, make sure they have a built-in "quenching" diode for back-EMF, or add one to the relay. There's good info on this in the old www.bcae1.com site under "relays"

You can also do A LOT of cool stuff with a PAC Audio TR7...and other PAC modules.

If I remember correctly you can buy relays with the diode already wired in. I am also looking up what the tr7 can do if used as a relay

To add to this it seems like they are on sale at Sparked's site for $52.50

The coil current pull on that relay is 100mA

The Pioneer DEX- P99RS has a max rating of 300mA for the remote on
The Pioneer AVH-W4500NEX has a max rating of 300mA for the remote on
The Pioneer Floating screens has a max rating of 300mA for the remote on
The Kenwood DDX9907XR has a max rating of 200mA for the remote on
The Current models Kenwood excelon units have a max rating of 200mA for the remote on

Do you really need any relays to turn on your amps? If your amps needs a delay turn on, use the remote out from your DSP.
