Being that's winter in MI, I've been moving a lot of snow. After making passes between the cars w/ my plow (so I'm pushing the snow straight ahead instead of off to the side), I keep wondering what the long, skinny piles of leftover snow are called that leak out from both edges of the plow or a snow shovel. I call them trailings, but is there an official word?

While the word "windrow" most accurately refers to hay or other crops that have been gathered into long lines to aid in their drying, I believe that it also is used when referring to snow.

If you google "snow windrow" versus "windrow" you will see what I mean.

Yep, that appears to be exactly the word I was looking for! In fact, I found several references to clearing the snow windrows at the end of driveways that are created when the plow comes down the street. Thanks for the info!

Things you never think about... ever.

Thanks. I've learned something new today.
Snow Windrow.
