What fuse do I need?

I'm hooking up a sub to my existing system, so i'm running a new line from the terminal on the battery (there's one spare).
This will run through a fuse right there, and then onto the Amp.

The sub is a Memphis 15-SC12D4, a 500w RMS (1000 Peak?) Shallow Subwoofer. It'll be in a sealed box.

Running it, will be an Alpine PDX 1.600 Monoblock Class D 600W Amplifier.

On this amp, it has 4x 20 Amp fuses. (PDF here)

So would I be correct in assuming I need an 80 Amp fuse if this is the only thing i'm going to run off this line?

Also you reckon 4 gauge or 8 gauge wire connecting it would be the go?

Thanks

You can either fuse for the gear connected or fuse for the wire.

If your wire run is longer than 4 feet, I highly recommend 4 gauge and you can fuse it at the battery for 80 amps.

Check here for the general guidelines:Recommended Power and Ground Cable Sizes

I've used short runs of 8 gauge on amplifiers with 70 amps of fusing and never had a problem with it. In fact, I am doing that right now in my Mustang with one of my amplifiers. The other has a 4 gauge wire.
