Woofer of unknown specs - is a ported box possible?

1327 Views 15 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Holmz
I have an old Memphis 15" and I'd really like to put it in a slot ported box and make my rear hatch go BRAAAANNG BRAAAAAAANG dog!

J/K kinda... I'm an SQL guy 100% I like it loud AF, but it's got to be clean or I just can't listen to it. Does anyone have any insight as to how to approach designing a vented enclosure for a sub with unknown specs??

NOTE: there are no original manufacturer specs available direct from Memphis and the 1 other post I found listed specs that contradicted each other so much that WIN isd went all red font warning mode so I seriously doubt their validity

Google is “Parts express DATS”
got any more info? Pics? model number? If not then you can try a 4 cuft box tuned to 35hz to be safe.

This is your only solution... and maybe you can find someone near with one. Been there, done that with numerous drivers and any arbitrary enclosure is a wild stab in the beginning & a second guess in the end because without proper specs you won't even know what type of enclosure is suitable, much less the size range. You'd be surprised how far off many common drivers are found to be.

The only problem, and while i agree that it is the only real solution, do you expect someone to spend $150 to spec out a $50 subwoofer?
Have you tried here?

Loudspeaker Database

There is a method to get the T/S specs with an oscilloscope, I forget the details though. I know more people with an o-scope than a DATs

I expect that the OP might ask to have it tested by someone near if they have one. Not sure how you twisted that into purchasing.

It is clear to me that he need to purchase a new or used one, or find one to hire/borrow.
(At least that is what I was implying when I wrote the post #2.)

Then whether they keep it or seek it is up to them.
If they are doing a lot of $50 subs then they should keep it.
When I first saw that site some time ago, I thought it was going to be the next best thing since sliced bread, that's until I realized they use manufacturer stated specs, not tested for actual.

It's cool. I seriously doubt most will buy one even in this hobby where they will spend twice that amount on a single driver. A shop might have one... never know until one asks around.

OAN, many have no clue how much marketing influences sales. A good example..... the famed JL ZR800 that everyone drools over. Compare tested (Erin's results) vs JL's manual numbers. Granted the performance is there regardless, but it makes you wonder if marketing states other figures to either protect the design, or to appease spec snobs that look for "perfect" numbers.

I bought a DATS, and my friend who is into building speakers also bought one.

But we are probably not representative of the usual demographic of people playing with cheap speakers?

Not sure.. I mean, that is the exact reason I bought my first Dayton WT(2,3?) some years ago. This was before Elemental Designs started blowing out their EQHS woofers. One of the key things I remember while getting a grip on driver parameters & applications was that many manufacturers don't give accurate specs. The woofer tester confirmed that and became a highly effective tool when using inexpensive drivers... the biggest culprits of erroneous data.

EXACTLY what I came to understand also...and no, this site didn't have specs for this woofer. If I remember correctly it didn't have any Memphis specs at all
If you're bent on using that sub, I'd put out a feeler for someone with a tester within a reasonable distance. Heck, it can be done so quick with the right tool, they might even do it for free or a 6 pack.

First thing I Would is post the Model # of the sub..

I wouldn't have even made this thread without that info.

^That scenario^ is exactly when a DATS become more than a pretty box.
