Oh, how I can't stand this song... but it does bring out some (ok, a lot) deficiencies in my system. Does anyone know where the placement of the shaker in the stage is supposed to be? I believe the test disc I have said it was supposed to be in the back of the stage, but in my system it is clearly coming from just forward of the passenger's side a-pillar.

Right center. It should define the far rear of the soundstage. The next closest thing "forward" is the double bass.

What an awful track.

It should be between the far right and center of the stage. In my car it's actually a little closer to the right than the center, and that's the reference I'm using. There's a violin that defines the far right of the stage, and the shaker should be a little left of that.

The Shaker should be just inside the right side at back of stage.
Violin is on the left side.
The Viola is right of center and forward, near front of stage, and inside of the Shaker.

I attached the stage map from the IASCA disc.

Many cars will flip the position of the Shaker with the Viola.
A home system will present them as shown in the ISACA map.

Interesting, Thanks! I just listened to it in my house. It still sounds like the viola is at the outer edge of the stage to me. It could just be that the shaker is more reverberant, and it fools me into thinking it's further in.

I hate that track.
In early 2000's I built fiberglass kicks with a 4" CDT mid. I was using the Chesky Demo disc and her voice revealed a resonance in the kicks that I couldn't tame with handfuls of modeling clay. Turns out it was just her ****ty voice.

Correnteza, Gramma's Hands and Sweet Georgia Brown are great tracks though. Also Connecticut Early Music Festival Ensemble ... Concerto for Flute in D. The solo flutes sound scary real.

Just dug this up from a 2004 post in audiogroupforum:

“In 'Spanish Harlem' this is a 'close miked' piece. Rebecca Pidgeon is located center stage. She is flanked on either side by stringed instruments that define the stage size but not the limits of the room. The Violin is located to the left of the stage with the Viola to the right. The violin should be far left and the Viola should be right/center. A guitar is just to Rebecca's right and should be on an even plane when she sings. The shaker is in the right channel at the rear of the stage and should give you a sense of stage depth. The bass and Piano are behind the Guitar. The Piano should sound close to the stand up bass. From center/left to center rear for the bass."

You need to listen to the disk on a relatively high end home system. Having a good home reference system works wonders towards getting your car sounding good.

Take your disk and go demo it on some nice setups at your local home audio store. Most places to mind you coming in and playing a few tracks on their demo system. Have a good listen you'll get a really good understanding of how that track is supposed sound.
