Not having a swingface is a plus for me.

One less motorized component that can fail.

One less electrical component that might cause noise.

Plus there's nothing more annoying than the faceplate retracting while you're still in process of loading the CD, trapping and scratching your favorite audiophile disc.

Well then it looks like Alpine is correct in their market assestment in that either people don't need or don't want motorized faceplate.

However, I don't buy the "another component to break" argument. This feature has been around for a number of years among all the manufacturers. It's a mature technology that I rarely ever hear user having problems with. From a feature perspective, it's pretty cheap of Alpine going back to a dated and interim mechanism. C'mon, how late 90's is that!

If you detest motorized faceplates due to it's praticality then the drop down version should not be an ideal alternative. Heck, go back to the front loading mechanism that worked on the early 90s decks and still used by high end units such as DVI-9990, DRZ-9255, CD-700II, Z1, etc.

I had two motorized plates from Alpine crap out on me. Thanks no. ;)

Not like I care, I'm stuck here with a drz. :p, still left a sour taste.

The european 9887r describes the crossovers as a 3-way or 2-way Channel Divider. The u.s. model has a 6 position hp/lp digital crossover. The alpine units out right now (9885, 9883, 9881, 9873, 9870) have a 3 position hp crossover. So it seems the 9887 will do an active 2 way front stage.

Does anyone have more info on the crossovers?

hmm...might try to hold out and snag a 9887 when they're clearing them out for the new. i'd like to replace my 9833 while it's still working. and considering the faceplate probably detatches just like a pioneer with that type of face i wonder how it would hold up being detatched 5 times a week? my 9833 sure is holding up nicely.
