Old thread but I’m building out my F80 (with HK system) soon. Starting with just adding a JL W6 to the trunk, reusing my Audison 5.11 DSP amp (just using sub channel), adding sub bass knob, and trying to tune the rest of the stock hk speakers the best I can via the head unit controls. I’ve heard the window rear brake light housing and parcel shelf can be very rattley with a trunk sub in f80, did you treat any specific spots of the trunk with sound deadening ?

The F80 trunk area is quite bad this Is how I’d rate them from worst to lowest

Number plate
Rear trunk lid
Trunk sub floor were tire compressor is stored
Fuel filler lid
Rear parcel shelve
Folding backset catches.

I stopped after the first three which is ok for normal listen levels and up to about 120db , after that the other three are rattling. At some stage I’ll do rear parcel shelve. I just used Dynamat , but it could really do with close cell layer as well.

BMW USB C adapter retrofit Into F30 / F80 BMW.

Workphone got changed to iPhone 16 recently so first phone I‘ve owned with USB C. This made my factory phone cradle obsolete as it has an apple lightning connector which meant I only had one USB B point in the car. I use that one for a thumb drive of lossless rips of my old music collection. I could of either added a BMW hub and another USB B port or looked to do something a bit different. There was no USB c option for the BMW f3x and F8x models.

Was looking at later model BMWs where they had USB C which meant 15 watt charging and two adapters. One for charging only , and another that was connected to the factory Idrive system for USB input / audio / apps. However it looked like the adapter was usb 2 rather than usb 3 standard. Got me thinking, my current system is USB 2 , I could use a later model adapter and get the faster charging plus usb audio support for my IPhone 16.

Install

I bought a secondhand USB C adapter which came with a bit of trim on it. I looked around the armrest console area for a place to install. The adapter was too deep to mount at back of console so opted for a location next to current usb / aux adapter. I trimmed down the trim that came with the USB c and mounted it. I found it was just a bit too deep and was too close to handbrake. So I transferred the aux/ usb to new position and installed usb c in the original adapters mounting position.

Cabling

I reused the BMW phone cradle USB connection and repurposed it to the USB C adapter. The connector for the USB c has a different key. Rather than modding the existing connector I transferred the correct connector onto the USB cable.

The USB c adapter needed 12 +ve , earth , backlighting circuit and USB connection to the BMW Idrive system.
I made up a power loom for USB C which needed runs to rear fuse box , earthpoint behind rear left seat bolster and a tap into the armrest bunker light.

For the fuse box it had unused switched fuse positions related to the BMW idrive. I installed two leaf contact terminals into the fuse box for the ve+ 12 power using 0.5mm2 cable. I then tidied up the wiring for that factory install look.

The earthpoint didn‘t have any positions left. So added a larger earthpoint comb from the same BMW series.

The lighting circuit just meant using a pin socket removal tool to remove contact from armrest bunker light connector. crimped a new factory connector on with a positive feed running to usb c adapter backlight. ( sorry no photo )

Restored power to car and tested with phone . Charging working . Phone entry came up on Idrive snapin USB entry. Tested audio and able to USB C stream audio from IPhone giving lossless audio option from phone apps.
