Can you use a Universal Bass Control Knob for JL Audio Amps?

I am upgrading my old Kenwood Amp to a JL Audio RD900/5 with an integrated 500w 2ohm subwoofer (great BANG for the buck!). Unfortunately, JL Audio does NOT include a Bass Control knob for this amplifier.

Question: is it possible to use a "universal" Bass volume Control Knob or do I need to purchase the more expensive JL version? In my particular install, I have a Kenwood Bass Control knob installed in my dash (image below), would it be possible to connect this to the RD900/5?

Thank you!

Yikes! the JL bass control knob cost almost $60 (w/tax)!

This works on the Slash series, so if the RD utilizes the same remote as the slash then you can do the same as the fella in this video and make your own. I suggest you get quality components from Mouser/Digikey (potentiometer) and not from amazon.

thank you Ricky. I went ahead and purchased the JL just to be safe. However, I was curious it looks like the cord is a standard cable (old schol phone jack cord with 4 electrical wires inside) and terminates with a "phone-jack" style plug.

If so, why wouldn't any mfg cable like the Kenwood phone jack style I have work with any AMP that accepts a phone jack-type plugin? In other words, what makes the JL connection cable connector unique that requires a JL component (as Jimmy indicated in his post above) to control the line-level bass knob?

I am wondering the same thing specifically Kenwood also, I lost my other remote when I accidentally left it in my old truck. Took the sub just so it wouldn't get stolen and didn't know at that point I was never going to see her again or I would have taken wiring harness too! Kenwood wants almost $200 CAD to replace them both!

Because their configuration (traces on the pcb) may be different from manufacture to manufacture. They basically all use the same chip to control the bass boost/eq. Some remote controls use 50k pots, while others may use 500k. Some remotes have LED’s added so some pins for that cord may be used for that, so trying to use a Kenwood controller on a JL amplifier may not work or cause damage.

Hi Ricky, I can't seem to find a way to message you directly again. I made the youtube video from the information you helped me out with. I have a friend who is in need of help finding another potentiometer part because his knob only increases volume for the first 1/2 of the turn, after that it does nothing. Can you point me in the right direction of how to advise him? Thank you sir!

@TrickyRicky I've got a JL Audio M400/4, and I'm having issues making a remote gain knob. I saw a YouTube video of someone saying you helped them out with their JL amp, and they got it done with a 10k potentiometer. It doesn't seem to be doing the trick for mine.

I've scoured the internet, and I cannot for the life of me find the schematics for my amp. I essentially need a HD-RLC. Would you mind sharing what pots I need?

Thanks so much!

Not sure if it's the exact reason but some manufactures reverse the potentiometers direction for up and down. Example I tried to use a uni knob on my massive blade amp and while it functioned kinda the actual knob rotated opposite of every other one I had and amazing difference. So most likely it's a wiring issue to create priority.
