I'm trying to finally make a decision on what sub to go with permanently.

Any suggestions on songs with bass lines that help distinguish the good subs from the bad? What songs do you guys go to when testing the quality of subs?

Is it really possible to tell the quality of the sub by listening how a low frequency sine wave sounds?

I personally would guess that it is best to identify 4-5 tracks in your music collection with prominent bass guitar and other instruments, study them well with your car and home stereo equipment. Eventually you will be able to tell bad bass from good bass. This is what I do, and in my view, EQ settings do matter somewhat. With rock and pop music I go easy with deep bass eq because it's possible to make those tracks to sound too boomy with too much deep bass. Rap on the other hand may benefit from a strong bass boost setting. However, if I leave my rap boost setting on, my rock and pop music will not sound as good even though the sub is the same.

I've found that most, and I mean MOST rock songs have much cleaner bass in them. Even with the volume all the way up, they never get close to what a rap song hits.

I think a song by slayer has some hard hitting bass lines, but it's still not close to rap.

Classic rock - especially older ones like "heart - crazy on you", just simply sound WAY more clean and crisp with the same settings. I can't explain it.

I think it's the actual instruments being recorded onto a track rather than synthesized ones (is that the right way to say that?)

My personal list so far:

webbie - six twelves

YG - toot it and boot it

lloyd ft jules santana or something? - beamer benz or bentley

far east movement - like a g6

lords of acid - show me your *****

kia shine - krispy

of coarse, what I do is simply go into audacity, split stereo track, -9db each, put mono on each, quick mix, then boost the bass up about 5-10db, sometimes more.

But those songs should be pretty good to start with, in fact, the only one I can recall editing is crispy

I've got some electronic/rave/house/etc and pop/other songs if you are interested in those as well

And if you need to know exactly how to edit in audacity just ask, it's real simple

Skream's remix of La Roux's "In for the Kill"

Tipper Album, "Disolve Out" Tipper - Dissolve (Out) (CD) at Discogs

Also Critical Path

Tipper are the guy who owns the Charger on the cover and a producer. Charger has 6x 18" in place of the rear seats and PA speakers on hydrolic rams to lift up the tailgate for gigs-plays the Custard factory in the UK occassionally! The guy with the Charger wanted music to show off his system and him and his producer mate came up with that album, great left/right sweeps and HUGE sub bass, one of my all time favourite alums-make me miss my old Stroker 18D2
