Has anyone tried building an Extended Bass Shelf (EBS) enclosure?

Been playing around with WinISD a bit lately for fun, and really like the EBS options for vented enclosures (both -3 & -6 dB options).

Curious if anyone has actually heard one in a car and could comment on the sound.

It appears to be the least efficient vented design in the 30-80+ hz region, with great extension below it.

I'm more interested in knowing about the sound quality and transient performance, since the enclosures are a lot larger. I'm under the general assumption that between sealed & vented enclosures, the larger enclosures tend to sound faster in vented like they do with sealed (lower QTC).

It might seem like a big price to pay with the larger enclosure, but supposedly it's still more efficient 30-80 hertz than a 0.5 QTC sealed enclosure.

Built one years ago (mid 90's?) with a pair of Atomic 8's in the back of a 87 Ford EXP. Not some super beefy subs, but ones that were rated for around 150 each & about 8mm of throw IIRC... was a long time ago, eh? Anyways, I designed the box for the extension which they gave, but also sacrificed a bit of bump in the upper response so they tended to sound a little dry on some genres, but not as dry as an oversized sealed. Hip hop played fine, R&B fairly decent, bass music (various from Bass 305 to DJ Billy E) was impressive for the lil midgets. The overall box size wasn't huge so I lucked out with that and they were only being fed with about 50 watts each. Had I been into SQ back then it may have sufficed. But that's about all I can really say....

I have a Kicker L7 15 in an EBS enclosure. The box is 7.11^ft, minus sub, port and bracing. It is tuned to 27 Hertz and if I remember correctly it is around 119% of the recommended maximum ( EBS is 125% - 175% of recommended for the sub chosen so the size will vary from one brand to the next ) for the L7. The kicker ( pun intended ) here is that I'm only delivering the subs RMS of 1,000 watts. I'm using a DX1000.1 and have the 4 Ohm DVC sub wired down to 2 Ohms in parallel. The system produces copious amounts of bass and draws a fair amount of attention for being old Kicker equipment. I did research a lot of ported box designs prior to choosing the EBS design and actually had it in a sealed enclosure that had a QTC of .779 and it performed really well in it. However, it literally doesn't come close to it at all in the EBS box. I have 2 gauge electrical, no extra battery and a stock alternator and have owned this setup for nearly 2 years without a single issue. The HU is Power Acoustik, no loudness and no bass on the HU- I only use the amps bass knob. I have 2 Pioneer 6.5 coaxials up front with 2 door tweeters and nothing in the back doors. It is worth having if done right and the extension exists above and below the tuning frequency of my box. As far as the way it sounds is concerned, it becomes addictive - to me personally anyway - to get in my truck everyday and have all the bass I want without the ridiculousness of a having 150 DB + sound system to worry about keeping turned down is a plus as well. It sounds and feels awesome.

The ported version of using an overly large sealed to extract the most low end extension possible. Of course the caveat to both is losing something in the upper range. The good thing is you usually get a little more "thump" with the ported version compared to sealed. More technical descriptions and comparisons can be found in Dickason's Cookbook.

I bet I did that in one of my early setups, way back. I had a hatchback and built this box that filled it, it was about 4+cf. I had 4 tens in it. Was not happy and took two out, ended up leaving the two that shot into the rear corners. Then I tried porting it 4cf with two tens. Tried different length ports. I was trying to get low and loud of course, but I wanted 30Hz like an IB setup in another car I had. It worked, I seriously messed with people with that setup, subs were still a big deal back then. However I still had a huge box in the car. It ended up with a pretty short port working the best.

So I can't leave before saying I really want to port my IB 15s now. But the way it is, not seeing how I can fit a big port in there. Getting rid of the car soon kind of POs me I have not tried it at least just to see what happens. But can't see the point of trashing the baffle or tearing out the deck and building a complex port to fit in there. I do think that large boxes have something different when it comes to ports, like they almost unload without cancelling or something. But if you want that go low IB range, that is just what you want right.
