Installing a Powered Subwoofer in New Car

I have a 2024 Kia K5 that I am just trying to get a little better audio than what the OEM system provides.

So far, the system consists of an aftermarket 4-channel / 50 watt RMS amp and a set of aftermarket front and rear door speakers. The head unit is OEM. I am thinking of installing a powered subwoofer. Maybe a Kicker 10 inch / 180 watt RMS unit.

My question: I was told by a Crutchfield tech advisor that with my system since I am using the OEM head unit that the audio signal I should send to the powered sub should come from the OEM head unit's 'Rear Speaker Level Input' wires and not tap into the actual rear speaker wires that connect the amp to the speakers.

I guess that would be called low-level (head unit to amp) vs the high-level (amp to speakers)

Thanks, Ron

We got a Kenwood powered Sub for my daughters Subaru and that's how the install shop hooked it up...

while yes you obviously do not want to tap into the amplified wires and take signal from the head unit before the amp you still should check to be sure with taking the signal from the rear channels.

1) on fader/balance alot of us will obviously have the tuning towards the front= less output on the rears= less output for your sub= need for more gain= distortion.

2) alot of cars today have a volume reduction, filter etc right from factory for the rears = agian much weaker signal for the sub.

I personally would always take signal from the fronts for a powered sub not rears.
