Morel Ultimo 12 - Review and Test Data

I'll have to say that we were all super surprised at how the ultimos sounded in the small airspace. The graph from the max tells no lies, but I feel bad that @RickWilson might be in for a set of subs.

I'd have to say they seemed to sound better than the gb's which was not what I had expected.
... But it really had a more precise bass sound where the gb wasn't as clear and the gb has a greater decay I think than the ultimo.
I'm assuming that both were EQ'd to provide identical "in room" response to match the target curve for the listening comparisons?

Curious what tracks you used for the listening comparisons?

@RickWilson you know they make an Ultimo Ti in 9" as well right - front sub/midbass?

The original Ultimo had an aluminum former whereas the "new" Ultimo Ti has a Titanium former.
...
While they predated the "Ultimo" series, the Morel "Ti9" that I'm familiar with were the O.G. Phoenix Gold Titanium Elite Ti9m shallow midbass drivers that are equivalent to what the Morel SW9 or Supremo 9 are now. PG offered a complete Titanium Elite component set that were made to PG's specs by Morel of Israel.

I used the PG Ti9m midbass in the doors of my Acura Legend install with great success back in the day. While they could dig fairly low, they were midbass drivers and not intended to be subwoofers. But at the time, they were one of the only large format midbass drivers available with an extremely shallow 2.5" mounting depth intended for IB door locations.

Here's my old DIYMA classifieds listing for an extra backup pair of the Ti9m that I let go for a steal several years after selling that Acura Legend with photos and a PDF of the spec sheet...

I agree with another poster, the Morel TI is a pure SQ sub... not alot of excursion... its got low inductance for how massive the voice coil is.. you'll run out of excursion before you hit thermal limits (in theory)

Way more expensive, but If I am not mistaken its made in israel instead of China so there is a huge cost difference not manufacturing in China..
Agreed regarding the surprisingly low inductance as well as the "excursion limited" statement, which I believe @daloudin alluded to in a previous post as well.

The somewhat small diameter of the spider landing relative to the large voice coil only allows for a narrow spider with fewer concentric "folds", and this limits its travel and the subwoofer's Xmech. The coil/former and motor have excellent venting for thermal dissipation, so no real issues in that regard.

Use them in pairs or multiples to get the desired SPL, though enclosure requirements might begin to make this an issue in some vehicles.

Oh awesome! I'm in Texas and follow them they do great work! Your build is insane by the way. You have me looking into changing all my plans and going SQ in my truck.
As a side note, IF you do end up installing a SQ system (with a DSP) in your truck, I would also highly recommend having it set up and "Tuned" by Jeffrey Hald who works at MTI in College Station, TX and also operates his own Tuning Services company that is called "Total Tuning USA".

Jeffrey can tune the system for you in person at/near MTI, but also offers "Remote" tuning where he ships you the equipment and instructs you how to set everything up and walks you through the process. I realize that Texas is a BIG state, so College Station might be many hours from where you live.

A good DSP will completely transform any system...IF the system is PROPERLY INSTALLED and PROPERLY TUNED. And there are only a handful of people in the country that I would trust to do the actual TUNING.

The cost of paying a Professional car audio system "Tuner" to setup, measure, and adjust your DSP is Well Worth It, especially considering the $$$$ you will have invested in your system.
