How high were you planning on playing the subwoofer up to?

 

Kind of off topic.. but IMO Stereo Integrity could/should update their logo a little bit. I also don't care for the balloon sized dust caps they put on some of their woofers either.. I mean damn near 75% of the cone on my 12" SQL is dust cap. I also think they use the same magnet on both the 12" and 15" SQLs as well. Tho of course, I guess that really has no impact on the way they sound.. just saying.

 

I actually like their logo. I think it’s sleek and not busy or flashy. It’s very common for 10’s, 12’s, 15’s etc to use the same magnet for the same line. My personal all time favorite is the RE XXX cone/dust cap

 

I also like the logo even though I opted for the carbon fiber dustcap on my SQL-15 just to try something different. I like a bigger dustcap that is about the same diameter as the motor.

I personally like the dustcap size on the SQL-12 compared to the SQL-15.

It just seems like those monster dust caps have gone the way of the hula hoop imo, nor do I care for the white basket on the SQLs.. as I definitely prefer black. But like I said, cosmetic issues aside, all I really care about it how it sounds.. and in that department I have NO complaints whatsoever!!

 

Glad to see he's bringing these back. I have a couple of the older cast basket ones and would like to add a couple more.

 

I have a ton left to learn, lol, but i was saying the builds themselves are the weak points, i havent been to an sq meet yet (sqology at HAT, look out, ima show up with the loudest car there, hoping it still compares as far as sq goes), but ive always been around highly budget constrained builds, and even worse by people who wont use "alternative" gear, so bang for the buck is lacking.

 

I can't say for certain that Le is the reason but most of the subs I've really liked had low inductance.

 

What is a good LE in your opinion?

 

to be fair, guys who optimize inductance are probably guys who optimize suspension linearity and inductance linearity, and product that are built well enough to have low inductance typically have money spent on them in other places too, and the guys who know the Le of the sub they bought are the guys that modeled theyre box and properly tuned their system, so its not like thats the only difference

How they get to that Le specification is necessary to understand as well ... is it because they have dual shorting rings or is it cause they kept the mass of the coil and former low to start with? Having low Le numbers is not an end unto itself as much as it is a balancing act between this and motor force to make sure that the cone can react swiftly enough to keep up with the slew rate of the amp and the incoming signal without distortion. That's where manufacturers like Morel come in... Ultimo Titaniums in sealed boxes are absolutely one of my all time favorite Subs but they can run out of steam pretty quick.

 

for your tastes, id definitely try to hear one on big power before spending money on one, BJG, i think stereo integrity and Fi are good brands for your taste, however, my mentality is keep adding ultimos until i cant see straight, but since money is needed to acquire them, thats not an option for me...

 

I actually asked what the possibility was of getting a HST-MKIII in a 12" form, and have yet to hear back.. one thing I can say about Stereo Integrity is they don't have much love for anything smaller than a 15".

because the company was at one time mostly HT oriented. Just Google the original HT18

 

I had the Morel Ultimo 12" in sealed and ported and was not that impressed with it for the money spent , there are a lot better value drivers out there.
eg: I now run 2 x Dayton Audio RSS265HO-4 (very low distortion drivers) ported and I actually prefer it's sound over the single 12" Ultimo I had , all driven by a Alpine PDX-M12 amp.

 

I'm certainly not knocking your woofers, but when even comparing those DAs to the specs to the SI SQL series, I don't see anything that really catches my eye.. are you sure that moving from one 12" sealed to 2 10" ported is not the reason you prefer your current setup?

 

The Ultimo 12" I had was in a ported configuration then I went to my current 2 x 10" setup driven by the same 1200wrms amp.

After everything I had read about the Ultimo I was expecting more and was a bit disappointed for the money I had spent but I didn't know what to expect from the Dayton drivers and they are cheap , I was pleasantly surprised , they are very low distortion drivers and are built like tanks , some of the best bang for buck subs out there.

My son scored the Ultimo and he agrees my setup just sounds better and he has the exact same setup except for the sub..

I have heard of them, but have not actually heard any Dayton subs in person. However, unlike before where I was of the mindset that there were only 2 kinds of subwoofers, JL Audio and everything else.. I am now always interested suggestions especially when I hear bang for the buck. Don't get me wrong, those JLs woofers bang.. but that's all they do! LOL
