Are Eclipse amps still relevant?

I was just curious if Eclipse amps were still relevant or if they have long since been replaced in the audio world? Reason I ask is because I still have an Eclipse 32430 4 channel amp laying around that I acquired in a trade. I was curious if it was a good amp worth running or if I should unload it and buy something more up to date. I've found a few Eclipse DA6213 2 channel Class D amps for sale locally that I could pick up. I was just curious if the amps were still worth putting in a new setup or if they were outdated. Also, was wondering if those two amps would be a good pair together.

Thanks.

They would be a great pair together and that line was the best they made. Unless your trying to be cool their age doesn't matter as long as long as they work as they should. The 430 will put out 100 per channel+ with a preamp pass through for the 6213 if your not using a DSP. They will do well above rated. I ran those line of amps for more than ten years in multiple vehicles at the same time. The only complaint I have ever had is their size.

Perfect, good to hear. I really don't mind older equipment, as long as it still keeps up with newer technology. If the newer stuff has made a lot of advancements and makes the older stuff obsolete then a lot of times it justifies the new equipment. But if the older stuff still does what the newer stuff does (and I already have half of what I need) I don't see why not to use the older stuff.

Okay, dumb question:

If I were to run the Eclipse 32430 for the front stage components would I run each channel to it's own speaker (ch1 left tweeter, ch2 right tweeter, ch3 left woofer, ch4 right woofer), or would I bridge down to 2 channels and run each component set on a single channel?

Are there a good set of 6x8 components out there that run 2 ohm loads so I can get the most out of my channels? (120w vs 85w)

I found the Infinity Kappa 60.11cs 6.5" speakers that show to run a 2 ohm load. Are these any good?

You'll get more than the 120 in a real world application. So don't worry about power if you have to go 4ohm. Also you could buy individual drivers for a 2way with a Minidsp be active and control your own destiny.

Are you saying that running 4 ohm will get more than the 'rated' 120 watts that the 2 ohm claims in real world applications? Or running 2 ohm will get more than 120 watts? Sorry, didn't comprehend which you were saying.

Individual drivers are a tweeter and woofer separate (not packaged together as components) but still accomplishing the same thing? Definitely not opposed to this idea. I have the head unit to go active, so it's certainly not out of the question. Definitely not really opposed to buying individual drivers either. Most places I've looked at seem to show component sets, not individual drivers - maybe I'm just not looking in the right place.

No. I was saying that it will produce way more than what is rated at 2 ohm so It will give you what you need at 4ohm if you find a component set that runs at 4 ohm.

And Parts Express sells some really good, cost effective drivers.

Okay, well, bit of a bubble buster. I was off today so I figured I would get the amp out and mess around with it. I definitely don't think I'm going to have the room for these amps, unfortunately. I was messing around with the 32430 and it doesn't look like it will fit under the seat like I was hoping it would. I could put it behind the seat on the back wall, but then I'll be cutting into the room of the subs. I messaged the seller about the nicer of the DA6213 amps locally and it looks like the 6213 is just slightly larger than the 32430 that I already have. I haven't thrown in the towel just yet, so when I have a little more free time I'll size them up again to make sure it won't work before I give up. I was messing with it before I did an oil change on the truck, so I didn't spend a lot of time on it today. I'll wait til I'm off again and spend a little more time with it to see if I can figure out anything I may have overlooked. Otherwise, I'm in the market for amplifiers, something a little on the smaller size.

You won't really fit anything but smaller class d amps under the seats. There is very little room under there. Would you have room to stack them against the back wall on the drivers side while leaving passenger for the box?

How big of a box are you doing? My ranger is 48" curve to curve on the back wall if I Remeber correctly. That should leave you room to side by side the box and amps

I have a single cab Mazda B3000 (same as a ranger). I took the 5x8 covers off of the back wall panels, then mounted some 1/2" plywood boards onto the panels using the four holes that the covers/speakers screwed into on each side. I mounted my amps onto the plywood, vertically on the back wall. This left 31" in the center for a box. I put a slanted box there that has two 8" jbl gto804 subs. The box has two separate .35 c.f. chambers. I think it's a good and easy way to mount amps in a single cab ranger.

I'm using a PPI 900.4 and 1000.1, which are fairly small.

Good info here. Like I said, I'm not counting it out just yet. Just saying that my first idea was a no-go, so I'm going to have to reconsider. I was hoping to put the amps under the seat, but I had never looked under there. Come to find out there isn't much room under there at all (like you said street.terror), so that ruled out that plan. My next hope is to be able to put the amps on the back wall next to the sub box. Ideally I'm hoping to have a box with 2x 10's in it. Like I said, I just really need to spend some more time looking at it and coming up with a battle strategy. I'm hoping I can fit the box with subs and then put the amps in the corners beside the box. I'm thinking maybe one on each side so I can keep the box centered. I ruled out under the seats, I have a few other ideas brewing. It just really boils down to getting out there when I have some time and really studying the space and figuring out the best use of the space. Another issue I run into is I'm trying to make the build as stealthy as possible. The truck spends a fair amount of time outside so I don't want anything that is easily visible that attracts a bunch of unwanted attention.

My truck is at a body shop for the next week or so, due to some dude backing into it when I was eating lunch a few weeks ago. When I get it back, I can post a few pictures of how I have my amps mounted in the back. The amps cannot be seen when the seats are in normal positions.

With two 8's, the box sits perfectly on the ledge behind the seats in the center area. The seats can still go all the way back. I think two 10's would have needed too big of a box for the area.

Here is the box:

SR500. Those are great pics, thanks for posting. Also a nice looking box. I'd definitely be interested in seeing the rest of the setup when you get it back (sorry about your truck). what year is your truck?

I'm still open to the idea of 8's as well. I was holding out hope that I might be able to cram 2 10's in there without sacrificing room too much. If 10's don't pan out, then 8's are next up on deck.

Street.terror, do you have any pics of your setup at all? You really don't see many car audio installs in Rangers, so I'd love to see what your setup looks like.

It's a 2001. The JBL GTO804 subs are excellent and do well in very small boxes. As I said earlier, mine are in .35 c.f. each. I guess JBL quit making them, but they still sell them new occasionally on their ebay store "harmanaudio"; that is where I picked mine up at. They have two available right now. Good performance in a small enclosure is what I was looking for, and I feel I found it with these.

The box fits right in the notched out area on the back wall, where the carpeted piece is, between the plastic trim panels, which leaves plenty of room to mount an amp on each side. Hopefully, i'll have my truck back by Friday and I'll post a pic of the box and amps in it.

I did remove the jack from behind the passenger seat. I tossed my spare tire years ago; I carry a plug kit and a small pump with me all the time. It's easier than changing a tire.

I have one of the current state But it's all wrong and I can't do anything about it until spring comes haha. The angled up part is going away and it'll be flat all way across with the amp mounted at a slight angle behind the box. Plexiglas over the area the amp is in to allow for viewing.

These are a cube each tuned to 33hz. I was originally going to mount the amp in the open area but a flat floor allows me to toss more stuff in the back when going trips.

I really want to do a front mounted sub. There just isn't the room under the passenger side thanks to the heater box. I have the large pioneer console that houses a 6.5 from factory and I have thought of trying to cram a ported 8 into that space, or even 4 6.5 tang bands but I'd need some fiberglass skills for that.

You extended cab owners are so lucky, look at all that space back there! My biggest obstacle is going to be trying to fit all of my equipment behind my seat in a single cab. I do want to pull my seat out to take a little better look at the room (or lack thereof) under the seats to make sure that option is completely off the table before I go any further. I did take a little bit of a look last night, I just couldn't stand the anticipation. I think I have a couple more options in mind, hopefully one of them will work out.

What Ranger do you have? I don't have a cool audio console or anything like that.

I finally got my truck back from the body shop today, I'll spare you the details, but I hope nobody ever backs into your vehicle while you are eating lunch.

Anyway, here are some photos I said I would post of how my amps are mounted. Certainly nothing fancy, but I think it makes good use of the area where the factory 5x8's were. It also makes running wires very easy, as the panels have a lot of space behind them, and there is a huge opening to run the wires through once the factory speakers are removed.

I have carpet to cover the boards with, but I'll wait until I need to pull the amps out for some reason in the future.

Sorry, I've kind of been MIA lately.

Thanks for the pictures. That setup actually looks GREAT and a FANTASTIC use of the space back there. I think that optimizes the space about as well as possible. Do you have any problems with the seats going all the way back or the armrest interfering with the sub box back there?

I've been using only Ecipse amps Since 2003. I think they are in the mid-high range of amps in terms of sound quality even today. After having an Eclipse HU and Eclipse 3422 4 channel I could not get interested in anything else. I have wanted to try (old school) Zapco and Rockford Fosgate Punch amps but never got around to it. I have not ever owned a Class D amp and I believe that nowadays the new amps are mainly Class D. So I don't know how to compare those to the Eclipse like the Bestbuy sold Alpine Class D's. I would guess they are decent but don't have the quality of these older units (unless you spend a lot more money on a good German brand like Hifonics or what-not). That was my impression anyway.
