Grill Cloth vs. fine dust, dirt, and debris

Recently I've been thinking about swapping out my midrange with a midrange that consists of a phase plug that leaves the voice coil vulnerable to dust and debris. The location will be on the floor pan/kick area, which has a lot of dirt and dust traffic. I am wondering if grill cloth over a mesh grill is enough to end my worries? Maybe if I apply two layers?

Or is there alternative methods I should look into?

I currently have IDQ8s in the kicks with a metal grill with no cloth and there was a large quantity of dust collected near the surround and around the cone. So, I am worried I might run in to problems when I go with Peerless Exclusives.

Thanks in advance.

They aren't as durable, but buy yourself some pantyhose (or get your GF to buy them). You can get them in almost any color and they should stop anything from getting in. I would think they are acoustically transparent. Maybe not.

hmm. Pantyhose. Good idea. I might steal some from my gf. I know a few times, her panties were unpenetrable

I hope she doesn't think I'm crazy for playing in the dirt with her panyhose.

I might just try to get my hands on some speaker cloth along with pantyhose and do some testing. I was hoping someone has a definite answer and has already tried this.

Washing is for sissies.

I've had plenty of panty hose near my head at various concerts through the years and noticed no attenuation of the high frequencies....you should be fine.:)

Update. I got my hands on some pantyhose recently and I just wrapped one layer on a mesh grill and it looks like it'll work very well. I think one layer would do, but i'm going to wrap one more layer to be safe.

If anyone's curious the ones I got were L'eggs everyday regular pantyhose. That's what to box says. Size Q jet black sheer toe. It's the kind that fits all the way up to females, or weird males, waist.

It has two different sections, which has different thickness. From the waist to the crotch, it's thicker, which is what I used for the first layer. From the crotch down, it's thinner, and will be the second layer.

It was very easy to get it on the grill as well. Since the pantyhose is round and meant to fit legs, I simply slipped the pantyhose over the grill, bunched the excess behind the grill and pulled to stretch and straighten the pantyhose onto the grill, and used Loctite superglue to keep it in place. I left a little slack, because the tighter you pull the thinner the panty hose will be.

After getting the desired fit, I dabbed some superglue on the edges of the grill, over the pantyhose, and it will seep down to the grill and bond.

Thanks for the suggestion guys. I would've never thought of using pantyhose. Hell, I never thought I would be posting about pantyhose..

Okay I have some bad pictures to share of these grills I've wrapped.

I used some grills I had left over from a set of Mach 5 MLi6s. They almost fit the outer diameter of these Exclusive 7"s

and all I needed were these:

and scissors

I wrapped the panty hose around the grill, superglued, and then added a right of open cell foam for a snug fit on the recessed baffle.
