New Orion Amplifiers....The real deal?

Just looked over Orion's website and noticed the power ratings on their XTR and HCCA amps. They appear to be extremely powerful. I saw one that was rated at 300 x 4 @ 4 ohms. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with Orion over the past 5-10 years.

Not since the DEI buyout, but I do use their gen 1, 2, 3 amps.

I'm sure their latest stuff is powerful, but at exactly what distortion spec? Even if everything is on the up and up, they seem overpriced at best.

I love their old school amps, use mainly them, and am aware that I have a certain related nostalgic bias (which I'm OK with).

I don't trust Lanzar to handle the brand the way it needs to be to keep my interest. There was another post somewhere where it showed the boards were the same as the Lanzars now, big turn off.

And then as stated, overpriced. If you had just taken over a brand and moved it into the same house as a known to be cheaply made brand, I would think you would come out with a more open mind on your price, but these guys think that that badge supplies all the quality that the amp needs.

And 300 X 4 @ 4ohms..........that definitely sounds like Lanzar numbers:laugh:

MD Audio is the parent company of Orion and Lanzar these days. However, I think some other manufacturer is pumping out the only good Lanzar series; the Opti's.
Still, a few here say the "new" Orion is OK. It mostly still looks like it did when DEI owned them but, the wattage ratings are just crazy on those big amps.
I had a local Orion dealer tell me he was having problems getting them to service warrantied products but, that was well over a year ago. Maybe things have gotten better?

I got my hands on one of the newer Class d mono's a few months back and it looked like the Power Acoustik Bmf4400 circuit board.

the lanzar OPTI's are still good ?
i used to drool over them back in the " olden " days.
i thought lanzar was now just cheapo chinese stuff.

i'm looking for a robust sub amp for my DC audio 10".
an opti would be very tempting, IF they are what they used to be.

The XTR2000.4 is Class AB and rated for 300 x 4 @ 4ohm and judging from the size of the amplifier I'm inclined to believe it..

Here's an XTR 2250, rated for 250 Wrms @ 4 ohms and it made 258 Wrms, 381 Wrms @ 2 ohm and almost 800 Wrms @ 4 ohm mono which can be attributed to the amplifiers inadequate power supply..

Yes 57% at 1ohm. It's a cheap amp for sure. I've been waiting on someone to dyno one. I wonder if the HCCA has better efficiency?
I kind of want to swap to the HCCAs, the power per $ is unmatched. But they are large and would require way more work then I'm looking at doing. Also I don't care for the subs and speakers.

Orion subs and speakers do leave a lot to be desired. more for the burp or SPL crowd for sure. But, IMO amps are amps. They don't know the difference in SQ and SPL. So, if you need the kind of power that these amps apparently are capable of, you might take a look.
One observation though, the s/n numbers on the amp in the video are unimpressive and even a little vague...>65db. Does that mean that rating is at 1 ohm and 12.6 volts and as such the lowest number the amp is capable of?

Full disclosure, I've been highly critical of Orion as it currents exists. I've questioned the intent of the new owners (MD Audio) to do little more than mine profits from a legendary old school brand. I've also thought they're just another manufacturer that has gotten caught up in the "max power" ratings.
But, I will be the first to admit that I may have been overly critical. If Dereck's Amp Dyno number can be reproduced by different amps then, these may offer a really incredible 'watt per dollar' value.

I too have been critical of MD. But I've also seen more then a few people having quality issues with the large HCCA amps. Could be user error, or they are really cheap components as the price suggest.

I was really hoping these where going to do well and hold up. The HCCA 4000.4 is redicules for the price. I have no idea where I would stick it though

Those new HCCA amps are enormous. Try YouTube for some unboxing videos to get an idea.
I'd like to find a class D amp that can do 1000-1200 watts at 4 ohm to power a Dayton Ultimax 18.
But, I don't want to break the bank either. I have some older PPI class A/B amps that would do the job in bridged mode. But, again you're back to some serious current draw and a larger footprint.

Made the mistake buying Orion XTR Drivers 10 inch ..after 3 months one tore, Orion will not honour the warranty ....made it my personal mission to find locate and purchase Orion 90's gear which I have .....

Orion post 2000 gear DEI etc not worth obtaining and installing ........Chinese Rubber and Korean Circuit boards ............

Mission Accomplished ...

I actually think Korean boards are pretty good. It's those sourced elsewhere you need to be wary of. Orion subs look pretty 'blah' IMO. The XTR Pro's might be OK.
I can tell you Orion had a strong presence at the Car Audio Championships (MECA SPL division) in Louisville last year. But, the vehicles in their booth were actually competitors and they looked exactly as you'd expect SPL rattle-traps to look.

Matter of opinion, when a piece of car audio is over 20 years old and still performs as it did when first manufactured speaks very highly to the construction, design , only time will be the test to see if the current loud gear will stand the test of time, plus hold its value... Loud does not necessarily mean Quality, Durability, Practical .. made the error purchasing a new piece only to have it become useless after 3 months ...made contact with Orion Head Office in Florida and they attempted to make excuses questioning the install etc, no remedy or warranty offered. 2018 each piece of Orion gear installed in my vehicles is from the 90's.
