Hi Everyone,
I have recently purchased a brand new 2011 Golf GTI which comes with the RCD510 h/u and the "premium" 8 speaker pack, but unfortunately not the Dynaudio pack (12 month wait here in Australia...).
I have from my previous car, one set of Focal Polyglass (30th Anniversary Edition) 6.5" components, one PDX-5 amplifier, one PXE-H650 processor, and a low-end DLS 12" subwoofer in enclosure.
I am wanting to improve upon the stock system but not ruin the stock look, and certainly not pull the stock head unit.
My options as I see them:
1) Simply swap out the speakers, maybe get some KRX2 components up front and put the polyglass in the rear (only faded in when passengers are in the vehicle). I understand the RCD510 puts out approx 25RMS per channel, which would be OK but not great for these speakers.
2) Either use the PXE or obtain an MS-8 to take the line-level inputs and hook the speakers up to the PDX5
3) Something else
I am not a pro installer, but have experience in fitting component speakers and general car electronics. For example, I am comfortable running cables from the battery, tapping into remote sources, dynamatting, etc.
I am into solid SQ, and am really not interested in SPL installations. Although I do like punchy mid bass and some sub bass.
What are people's thoughts? Does anybody have any experience as to how difficult an aftermarket installation would be in a Mk6 GTI? I understand the speakers are riveted in, etc. What would be my best "bang for the buck" option to improve the sound / imaging?
Also, I have been quoted $800AUD for the installation of the VW MDI to allow digital iPod connectivity which seems overly expensive. Does anybody have a cheaper workaround or should I just pay VW?
Thanks in advance, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
