VW Golf Mk6 GTI (2011) Recommendations

Hi Everyone,

I have recently purchased a brand new 2011 Golf GTI which comes with the RCD510 h/u and the "premium" 8 speaker pack, but unfortunately not the Dynaudio pack (12 month wait here in Australia...).

I have from my previous car, one set of Focal Polyglass (30th Anniversary Edition) 6.5" components, one PDX-5 amplifier, one PXE-H650 processor, and a low-end DLS 12" subwoofer in enclosure.

I am wanting to improve upon the stock system but not ruin the stock look, and certainly not pull the stock head unit.

My options as I see them:

1) Simply swap out the speakers, maybe get some KRX2 components up front and put the polyglass in the rear (only faded in when passengers are in the vehicle). I understand the RCD510 puts out approx 25RMS per channel, which would be OK but not great for these speakers.

2) Either use the PXE or obtain an MS-8 to take the line-level inputs and hook the speakers up to the PDX5

3) Something else :)

I am not a pro installer, but have experience in fitting component speakers and general car electronics. For example, I am comfortable running cables from the battery, tapping into remote sources, dynamatting, etc.

I am into solid SQ, and am really not interested in SPL installations. Although I do like punchy mid bass and some sub bass.

What are people's thoughts? Does anybody have any experience as to how difficult an aftermarket installation would be in a Mk6 GTI? I understand the speakers are riveted in, etc. What would be my best "bang for the buck" option to improve the sound / imaging?

Also, I have been quoted $800AUD for the installation of the VW MDI to allow digital iPod connectivity which seems overly expensive. Does anybody have a cheaper workaround or should I just pay VW?

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

I have quite a bit of experience with these cars and this is the route you should take...

PXE on stock rcd-510 (excellent source unit btw). PDX5 (ran active) - Front channel on the stock tweeters, Rear channel on the stock mids, Sub channel to your DLS 12. Use the radio's rear channel on your stock rears.

You will be amazed at the difference more power on the stock speakers makes.

Try this first and change the speakers later if you don't like the results (you will though).

Hi,

Interesting idea, are the stock speakers that good? Comparable to the polyglass? It would certainly save me from pulling the door panels which would be a huge bonus.

Also, the kuftec MDI, could you possibly point me to an item link on eBay which would be suitable for the Mk6 GTI?

Thanks for your help

Yeah, that's the place Kufatec. The unit goes in your center console and isn't hard to install. Pull the shifter surround and the radio out to run the cable, the MDI just pops in.

The factory speakers sound damn good with the extra power and with the EQ in the PXA, you can correct the minor peaks in the high freqs. The factory mids wang pretty hard too. I usually cut them off at 30hz with a subsonic filter and don't use a sub. You can x them over at between 60hz for more up front bass or 80-100hz for better sub/mid integration.

To make the front set active, you have to take the front door panels off and do a little rewiring. Cut the harness to the mids and splice in 16ga wires run from the amp. You have to drill out the molex connector in the door jamb to get the new wires to the speakers but that's an easy task. Pull the factory mids out and look at the terminals, they are labeled. Trace the tweeter wires from the mid TO the tweeter. The red tweeter wire is positive and the black is negative.

Good luck with the install.

Hi, would the kufatec part be straight forward to install into a 2011 GTI? I'm guessing the pass through harness connects to the back of the H/U? Then I just run the cables through the centre console and install the MDI box in the correct place? Would it also require VAG-COM flashing in order to activate the media in function? Or would it just work?

Thanks for your help

Also, could you explain the benefit in running the fronts active? I assume that VW have tuned the front speakers well on the passive crossover and have selected decent points and slopes. It would really save me some work if I could put some power through them but keep them on the passive network, as I would not have to pull the door panels off. In addition, I could T/A the rears off the spare channels.

I'm concerned however that by putting a decent amount of power through the passive crossovers, I could damage the crossover itself....

You can buy the kit on the second ebay link, it's the same as the Kufatec.

The benefit of running active would be better control all around. You can time align the fronts to compensate for path length differences and have more power where you need it. The rears don't need the extra power (it's just for ambiance). The PXA has the capability to do 2 way active and not doing it would be a waste of it's abilities. There isn't an elaborate passive xover network in the car either. Just a simple cap on the + side for the tweeter.

If you don't feel like pulling the door panels off, at least run an extra set of speaker wires up front so you have the option to go active if you later decide to.
