How many of you build your own interconnects for you audio projects?

I would do it but with the deals on cable we have come across lately, its hard to compete. You guys remember the Deep Surplus RCA deal? I'm still going through those, at what,...a couple bucks each?

Hard to make your own for that kind of money.

A little of each.

use pre made, but snip the ends to exact length at the amp and solder new rca’s on the ends, shrink rap…ect

WOW, I am a little surprised to see that so many of you actually DO build your own cables. I guess this IS DIY MA after all:) I personally enjoy the whole "I did it myself" thing and it's nice to know that not many other vehicles out there have interconnects that look like mine. Not to mention that the quality of cables and connectors is at least equal to if not superior to that of most of the Major manufactures cables on the market. Ya, Ya I know the cables don't make a difference, Tell that to Radio Shack lol.

I did this last time, but not before. However, I used leftover ends from JL "Blue" series RCA's (so, I'd call them free...I used them in a previous install for 2.5 years, so I think I got my money out of them on that), and Gepco EZ for the conductor. 100 ft = $14. I bought cable pants and Techflex from PE, too.

Not a lick of noise and cut to length.

I was very happy with them.

usually yes, but i decided to try the cheap Monster one from the PE buyout and i'm happy with them... for now.

Yep, make my own. Not very difficult if you can solder. There's a ton of different connectors available from downright cheap to uber expensive. On the last set I made I used Neutrik Profi style connectors but found them a little big. I'll be looking for some more compact connectors for the next set I make.

I am about to make an order for the supplies that I will need to make my own. I do not want to have ANY wire balled up anywhere so I am going to make them to length. Besides that with the price of techflex, sold, some good ends and good cable it is still 30 bucks cheaper then the cables I was considering from knuconceptz and I will have material left over for more.

I might give it a try... I know that CAT5 as an interconnect might stir up a big fuss, but I've got a bajillion feet here and at work, so maybe I'll put it to good use.. My soldering is kinda rough, so I don't mind reusing perfectly good cables anyway.

I do not care what anyone says about cat 5. The twist in the pair is dif lengths period, 5 foot or 300 foot! The cat 5 theory is bull ****! If you build a cable out of cat 5 you are adding delay. There is complete difference between pairs 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8. If one side is 1 foot shorter than the other, why do it? If you must use an IT based cable use an 18-4 twisted pair. The pairs should be close in twist distance.

Absolutely not. I don't see the point in making your own interconnects. For those that do, I think you have too much time on your hands. RCAs are available in almost every length and are not expensive. You can get Kicker/RF/Monster 20ft RCAs for $20 or less. The quality is high, so you can't use that as an excuse either;)

I make my own for the following reasons:

1. I can
2. Fishability (run the cable and then terminate with RCA plugs once the cable is in place)
3. Visual consistency

I mainly make my own cables because I can. The process does not take long if you know what you're doing and I find that it helps when running the cables under carpet not to have to wrestle with the RCA plugs on the end. Once the cable is run in place I solder the ends on. No excess cable rolled up, and less time fighting the cable since it is lower profile without the RCA plugs. I also use cable that can carry more than two channels on a single run so I end up installing fewer runs.

I think some people forget what the DIY part of DIYMA stands for.

It's not that people forget what DIY is. It's just that time, like almost everything else, is a limited resource. Most of us have full time jobs, family's, and other life events taking place. I would much rather take the limited time I have and put it towards product selection, custom installation of a false floor, fiberglass etc. Why waste my time on RCA cables when they can be had for a decent price at every length needed off the shelf?
